Since my return to Hong Kong at the time of handover, I had opportunity to view the Bank of China Building at different times of decade apart. The last time was few years after my visit in 2006. The tower at night appeared strikingly different every time of my three visits. I couldn’t imagine the exterior lighting design for the tower could be transformed any worst from the original design which was by Fisher Marantz, a lighting consultant to I.M.Pei office that designed the building.

Even at the beginning, the illumination of the tower at night was of great challenge. The tower stands over 300 feet tall and with the exterior covered mostly of reflective glass. Thus the height as well as the reflective glass panes (at night reflect mainly of darkness of the surroundings) posed difficulties for illumination.

Nevertheless, the tower was illuminated externally mostly of the aluminum panels that marked the perimeter of the building and to a lesser extent the aluminum window frames. Through lighting from the ground, Marantz managed despite the height an even illumination for the tower that even included the two spires. The vast area of the dark window panes at night that sprinkled with lights from interior all bounded by the illuminated perimeter panels. It was a rather interesting image. The tower seemed almost transparent outlined by the illuminated borders of a skeleton standing there. So for many years the tower appeared to be illuminated at night as originally intended by the design.

My visit in 2006, arriving in the evening on my way riding in a cab to my Mid-Levels hotel, I passed by the tower but I couldn’t find it except I saw brightly lit pencil thin outline. At that moment I immediately grasped that the death of the original illumination design. Strips of LED must have inserted in the originally unlit feature line panels (painted in dark grey color) in those aluminum panels. The LED illumination was in such high intensity and narrowly focused that rendered the otherwise lit of the aluminum window frames fleeting from the integral part of the tower.

In my very last visit, the illumination of the tower got further deteriorated from what Bank of China Building, a class A banking tower should deserve. The LED still remained but now they are programmed to light up in sequence as if the building is being sketched out in the night in unending times. The tower might as well be an animated object towering in an amusement park.

The night view of Bank of China Building never has conveyed what the tower does during the day. The inflections of the different façades with different daylight conditions energize the inflections even further. Pei may have stacked the structural X-bracing that appeared on elevation analogues to a chain of diamonds. The real diamond quality actually is the sparkle of light caused by the viewing of many surfaces in their different spatial orientation. The reflective and refractive lights sparkled especially on a clear sunny day.

I am not too sure why buildings must be lit externally at night especially every night as being practiced in Hong Kong. Architects mostly do not conceive their buildings to be viewed at night. Day view of their buildings with light and shadow is their primary concern. The LED lighting the Bank of China Building highly that I.M. Pei was not consulted.

Unquestionably buildings stand out at night when they are lit. But, without lighting up the surfaces but just presenting them in silhouette negates the intrinsic volumetric quality of building where value of building mostly lie. When buildings are flattened with strings of lightbulbs or LED it is just a thoughtless flat advertising in the night.

Furthermore, brightness of LED is environmentally destructive despite of its energy saving quality. Perhaps BOC may want to save the daily lighting to few festival occasions and reverts back to the lighting design that Pei and Marantz first offered. The occasional best presentation is better than daily poor ‘look at me’ shouting in the night.

My familiarity with the BOC Building design is due to my working at I.M. Pei office in the 80s of which I was a member of the curtain wall team.
